Aromatherapy – History
Nefertum Was born from the waters of Nu from a blue lotus, When the petals opened it revealed a scarab. It changes into a young boy who is crying he became Nefertum.
Nefertum (Nefertem, Nefertemu) was an ancient god, the God of Perfumers and Aromatherapists ( at this time perfumers were all aromatherapists ) mentioned in the Pyramid Texts (c. 2350 BC), but became more prominent during the New Kingdom (1539 – c. 1075 BC) and later. For the ancient Egyptians, however, with their holistic understanding of the universe, fragrances and perfumes were not only divine as well as spiritual and therapeutic in nature.
Roles
God of healer, perfume, aromatherapy, solar deity, rebirth, healing and protection, fertility, and he was a personification of the sun. Most noted for helping ease Rā’s pain using a blue lotus.
Hippocrates used a wide range of medicinal plants to restore health, his quotes on it –
“Healing begins with an aromatic bath and daily massage”.
“Soak Rosemary sprigs together with Nettle roots in alcohol and you will have a medicine to rub the hairy part of the head causing hair growth”.
Why to use Aromatherapy?
Ancient India was one of the first civilisations that aimed at treating people holistically. Traditional Indian medicine, known as Ayurvedic (meaning ‘life knowledge’), is the oldest form of medical practice in the world, with plants and plant extracts being in continuous use there from at least 5000 years ago up to the present day.
Aromatherapy works through the sense of smell and skin absorption using products such as these:
